17 in a row. That’s how many straight games the Cleveland Indians have won heading into their game tonight against the Baltimore Orioles (8:08 PM ET, ESPN).
Yesterday’s 4-2 victory over Baltimore was just another ho-hum day at the office for the Indians who haven’t lost since August 23.
During the streak, they have ourscored their opponents 119-30. They had a three-game series in late August against the Royals in which they shut them out every game. They only have given up three or more runs in four of the 17 games. Only five of the 17 wins have been within three runs.
Cleveland will send Trevor Bauer (15-8 4.39 ERA) to the mound tonight. He has been superb since July 27, with a 2.19 ERA since that time. The Orioles will counter with Jeremy Hellickson, who has struggled since being acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies. In seven starts with Baltimore, he is 2-3 with a 6.87 ERA.
The 17 wins in a row are tied for the 13th best streak in MLB history. If they make it 18 after tonight, that puts them in a tie for ninth longest.
It is the longest win streak since the Oakland Athletics put together 20 wins in a row in 2002. Only one team has ever put together a win streak longer than 21 games, the New York Giants in 1916 who ran off 26 wins in a row (with a tie which is not counted in official statistics).
