Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals and J. D. Martinez of the Arizona Diamondbacks were named American League and National League Players of the Week respectively for the week of September 4-10.
Hosmer’s superb week consisted with him going 14-26 in seven games as the Royals went 4-3 on the week. Along with his .538 batting average for the week, he added two home runs, three doubles, three walks, eight RBI’s, and six runs.
Martinez has been outstanding since being acquired by the Diamondbacks, as he currently has 21 home runs in 45 games with the team. It continued this past week in his six games, in which Arizona went 4-2. He went 12-28 (.429) with seven home runs, 11 RBI’s, and eight runs. The week started off on Monday when he hit four home runs becoming the 18th player to hit four in a game (no one has ever hit 5+).
It is the first time in Hosmer’s seven-year career that he has been named Player of the Week. It is the fourth time in Martinez’s career that he has been named Player of the Week, the first three coming in the American League as a member of the Tigers.
